Holocaust Memorial Day 2017

Posted: Thu, 19 Jan 2017 09:43

Leicestershire County Council will be holding a commemoration event, which will be open to members of the public on FRIDAY 27th January 2017 from 1pm until 2pm at County Hall, Glenfield, Leicestershire LE3 8RA.

Holocaust Memorial Day is the international day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and all other genocides. It has been held in the UK since 2001 and the United Nations declared this an international event in November 2005.

The date specifically commemorates the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi extermination and concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau on 27 January 1945. It also enables the tragic loss of life as a result of subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur and other locations to be commemorated.

As well as being a time for remembering the destruction of individuals and communities and the impact on survivors and others, Holocaust Memorial Day is also an occasion on which we affirm our commitment to tackling prejudice, racism and discrimination in all its forms in the present day.
